The inner operation of an E-Cig

Have you ever been to a non-smoking restaurant and notice the person sitting near you is smoking? You consider telling the management about it, but take a moment to ponder this: he/she may not actually be smoking. They may be, in fact, using an electronic cigarette.E-Cigs

What’s An Electronic Cigarette?

You may be wondering what exactly an electronic cigarette (also known as an e-cigarette or e-cig) is. Actually, e-cigarettes are a suitable alternative to getting the nicotine effect that smoking regular cigarettes can produce.  Manufacturers design them in a way that makes them appear like a regular cigarette but they don’t have any tobacco or other harmful chemicals seen with regular cigarette. And, there is no flame to them.

It’s a battery-controlled device that changed liquid nicotine in a vapor, which is what the user ingests. E-cigarettes have none of the following:

  • Smoke smell
  • Ash
  • Flame (fire)
  • Chemicals (tar, carbon dioxide and more)

People who have used these types of devices and the manufacturer of them view them as a healthy option to regular chemical-filled cigarettes that result in a million deaths or more annually.  Some of the more positive aspects e-cigarette users have stipulated include:

  • Decrease or total elimination of smoker’s cough
  • Increase of taste and smell senses
  • Improvement in sleep

Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, invented the e-cigarette, patenting the device in 2003. In 2004, it was released to the Chinese market.  Since that time, many companies have begun the sale of these devices to customers from all over the world.

Concerns Over The Popularity In E-Cigs and Their Use

Despite the growing popularity seen with e-cigarettes, there are still some concerns about the vaping and its safety. One such issue is that the vapor still has harmful chemicals. Will users of electronic cigarettes learn down the road that their health condition was the result of e-cigarette use or is it really nothing more than a cleaner option to stop smoking?

No doubt there are legitimate concerns about using e-cigarettes… for whatever reason!

Electronic Cigarettes: The Parts and How They’re Used To Create The Smoking Effect

When you light a conventional cigarette, you cause the tobacco in it to burn. This releases smoke that has nicotine in it and the smoker inhales into their lungs.  However, with an e-cigarette, there is no combustion process. Rather, the device will heat up the nicotine liquid, changing into vapor, and this is what the user will inhale.

Of course, how the vapor is released will depend on the kind of e-cigarette used. The vapor may be automatically generated when the user inhales or there may be a switch to activate it.

There are three main parts to an e-cigarette:

  • Cartridge
  • Vapor chamber
  • Rechargeable lithium battery

The e-cigarette gets its power from the battery, which can be charged up using a charger similar to a cell phone battery charger. The battery is then affixed to a hollow tube (vapor chamber) that holds both the atomizer and electronic controls. This is the part that produces the vapor. Before activating the e-cigarette, the nicotine-holding cartridge is attached to the vapor chamber.  The cartridge tip is the mouthpiece for the device.

Users of the e-cigarette inhale the same way as a regular cigarette. When they do, the inhalation will start up the atomizer, heating up the liquid and changing it into a vapor. Inhaled vapor is delivered to the lungs, allowing them to get their nicotine fix. What the user exhales is similar to cigarette smoke, but doesn’t have all the harmful toxins cigarette smoke has.

E-cigarette fans are able to take enjoyment of the same sensations tobacco smokers enjoy:

  • Inhaling
  • Exhaling
  • Holding the e-cigarette in their hand

At the tip of the e-cigarette, there is an LED light that lights up when the device is inhaled. This is to simulate the flame of regular cigarettes.  Keep in mind that you should never light the device because this could lead to an explosion.

The Flavors Of  E-Cigarette Liquid Propylene Glycol

The liquid inside the cartridge is known as propylene glycol, which is an FDA-approved additive for food.  You know those bands that use smoke during their concerts? Well, the fog machines generating the smoke are using propylene glycol.

Now, e-cigarette cartridges have varying nicotine amounts as well as no nicotine in them. Manufacturers have also added in flavors to the liquid such as:

  • Apple
  • Caramel
  • Cherry
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Menthol
  • Tobacco

How Much Do E-Cigarettes Cost? Where To Find Them?

It’s not uncommon to find electronic cigarettes in store although your best bet is to find them online. There are so many brands and models available to choose from. Some are similar to tobacco cigarettes, although some look like pens, pipes or cigars. The price for these devices can range between £5 and £50 for the starter kit. A starter kit will include:

  • E-cigarette device
  • Charger
  • Several cartridges

The cartridges can last up to one pack of cigarette and sell for around £5 apiece. Consumers have the option of buying the e-liquid themselves to refill the cartridges. This can lessen how much money they pay, which is why the e-cigarettes are touted as being less expensive than regular tobacco cigarettes.
